I am a thirty-year-old, single “nobody” who loves Jesus and has a goal that feels a little bit reckless: I’m taking on New York Fashion Week alone. So crazy, right?
Not only is the idea of navigating and staying in the Big City by myself beyond intimidating, but I’m doing it during the one week of the year when “everyone who is somebody” floods the streets with their fits, designer labels, and exclusive invites.
Well… I am a nobody. How will I even get into shows? Are there free events open to the public? Where do you go? Which hotel is the safest? How much will all of this cost? Where should I eat? The questions are endless, and honestly, the answers are currently “I don’t know.”
For my 30th birthday, my mother and I visited NYC for the first time. It was a dream. I spent months planning Pinterest boards, but I had a lot of help. Because it was a milestone year, my family surprised me with the plane tickets, the hotel stay, and the car fare.
This time? I am doing it alone and strictly on a budget. I am a simple personal trainer and a woman in ministry. So, will this totally flop? I hope not. But I have just under eight months to plan, save, and investigate if it’s even possible to do this when you know absolutely no one.
But that’s the adventure I want to tell.
Too many of us put off experiencing life just because it doesn’t look exactly how we imagined it would. Truthfully? I wish I could do this with a husband, endless finances, and a top-floor hotel room overlooking Central Park. But that isn’t the reality for most of us right now. Certainly not me.
We are living in the “in-between” of promises. But “in-between” does not mean “in lack.”
In 2024, I lost a lot. It was a year that could have broken me. But in 2025, the Lord kindly showed me His mercy. He didn’t have to rebuild my trust, but He did. And after reading Ecclesiastes 5, I felt a sudden, sharp inspiration to finally start living in the now.
“It is good for people to eat, drink, and enjoy their work under the sun during the short life God has given them, and to accept their lot in life… To enjoy your work and accept your lot in life—this is indeed a gift from God. God keeps such people so busy enjoying life that they take no time to brood over the past.” — Ecclesiastes 5:18-20 NLT
So, what is He calling you to step into? What is the “good thing” that will keep you so busy enjoying Him that you no longer have time to brood over the past?
Move forward, friend. Maybe even take on a challenge like I am. I think we are all taking life, ministry, and family a little too seriously, when we are actually called to walk in the things we enjoy for the sake of His glory.
If you have suggestions, hookups, or advice—if you’ve been to NYFW, if you’re a local New Yorker, or if this “nobody” dream is something you want to take on, too—email me. I need all the help a girl can get.
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” — Ephesians 2:10 NIV
