I am about seven months out from NYFW in September. Exactly 211 days by the time this blog is posted, and 181 days from the estimated timeframe that the show schedule will be released.
So, for you to get an honest and genuine understanding of my exact plan and how I will get this done as a “nobody,” this blog will be breaking down my strategy, what I’ve learned, the tips friends have already shared with me, and what is coming up next.
How do you get invited to NYFW?
Designers and PR agencies are looking for content creators, journalists, and bloggers more than just influencers and Hollywood stars. Do the top brands make room for the elite? Of course. But the reality is that designers want coverage of their lines from people who will actually get the word out.
That is why I started my blog seven months out, and why I made this goal for the September show and not the show going on this week in February. This gives me time to research the history of NYFW and establish an interested following in my journey as a “nobody” taking on the industry. I understand I must give you all a reason to follow me and as I work on that, I want to share steps I have learned that need to be taken as NYFW approaches.
Roadmap to September:
- Start the journey early—ideally seven months out—to document my authentic growth and establish a narrative, gives people a reason to follow me long before the shows begin.
- Set up a professional email address (avoiding standard Gmail) and consider drafting my outreach from an “assistant” persona to establish immediate credibility with high-end PR agencies.
- Lean into a unique “hook,” such as the “nobody” taking on an elite industry, to give brands a fresh, relatable, and appealing reason to invite me into their space.
- Clearly outline my value proposition, promising specific content like blogs, long-form YouTube videos, and social shorts with a commitment to never “gate-keep” what I learn.
- Monitor the official calendars on NYFW.com or FWO.com about 4–6 weeks before the event, then immediately begin my email outreach to the specific brands and agencies listed.
- Organize my outreach in a spreadsheet to track every email sent, brand contacted, and response received, ensuring no opportunity falls through the cracks.
- Explore alternative entry points such as volunteering for shows, finding free event postings like Revolve, or attending after-parties to network with PR professionals.
- Dress extravagant and unique once you arrive to increase your chances of being captured by street-style photographers while walking around Spring Studios.
My tips from my friends so far:
- Baylee Smith sent me a list of her favorite foods and restaurants in NYC; I’ll attach it here.
- Lauren Worrell suggested I stay at the “Yotel” hotel. She loved her experience there and has attended Fashion Week before. Because she is a photographer and had a blogging website, she asked for a “media pass” and was able to get into smaller shows. She also suggested avoiding Airbnbs in NYC, as she’s only heard bad experiences.
- Tia Michaels has walked in NYFW—whaaaaaa!!! She walked in Runway7 and suggested I follow them and the shows they post. They do sell tickets, but Runway7 typically wants a minimum of 5k followers for models or media passes. Tia also humbly expressed that the fashion industry is cutthroat and can be hard to step into, especially as a believer in Christ, as most of the industry does not walk toe-to-toe with that.
How amazing are these tips?? Please keep reaching out, as I know this is information we all need to hear.
What are my updates on solo travel, hotels, and more?
- I am focusing on hotels in Midtown Manhattan, Tribeca, SOHO, and West Chelsea, as this is where most of the shows are. I stayed in Times Square last time and want to venture into a new area. Some hotels on my list: Arlo SOHO, Yotel, SOHO 54, The Ridge Hotel, and Hotel Indigo.
- I have started to build my “solo travel safety kit” in my Amazon lists. Some products on that list: Birdie alarm, door alarm jam, airtags, and sharing my location with family. I also plan to have pepper spray mailed to the front desk for my arrival.
- Tips for travel I have learned: buying vacuum seal bags for clothing with a portable handheld vacuum.
- Fun activities I plan to fit in: Brooklyn Bridge, Chinatown, Canal Street shopping, Little Italy, and the viral $25 blowout.
- My food list is tooooo long; I will add that to my next blog! 🙂
So where does this leave me today? It leaves me asking you all to be the most supportive friends by socially encouraging this adventure. Likes, shares, and comments give me the chance to share this dream with others and get it in front of the right people. Like Tia shared, most brands are looking for at least 5k followers. Y’all, I’ve got just over 500 on TikTok, a little under 400 on YouTube, and about 1,800 on Instagram. I have a long way to go.
But I trust God. I know He sees my heart in this adventure, and I am aspiring to reflect His light in this. If you need more understanding of my “why,” my first blog in Runway and Redemption breaks it down.
If you see lots of posts from me about this, haha, don’t get annoyed—your girl is just chasing a dream and enjoying her labor in this single season of her life! Love ya lots!!!
